June Meeting, Des Peres City Park, Wednesday June 7th, 2004, 6:00 PM

East side of North Ballas Road, just North of Manchester Road

Driving Directions:  Hwy 270  --  Exit Manchester Road.  --  Drive East about ¼ mile to Ballas Road.  --  Turn left (North) to Park entrance on right.

The annual members picnic is scheduled for 6:00 pm Tuesday evening, June 7th.

Members and their immediate family are invited to attend at no cost. We will all enjoy appetizers, salads, brats, and hotdogs; all of which will be supplied by the club. Sodas will be furnished, and you can BYOB if you care to.  If anyone has any special dietary needs/desires, please contact Karl Schmitt.  (636) 797-4203

There is no need for members to bring anything except their family. However, should you care to, a small quantity of dessert would be appreciated.

The picnic takes the place of the regular June meeting, which normally is held on the third Tuesday of each month. For the picnic, we have reserved the pavilion in the Des Peres City Park, on Ballas Road just north of Manchester Road. For most members the easiest way to get there is to take I-270 to Manchester, exit and go East to Ballas about one quarter of a mile. The left (North) and go about a city block, which will be on your right hand side.

See you at the picnic,  BratMeister - Karl Schmitt

So June is here and there is a lot to do.  Now that the Champaign show is history we can look forward to the European Car Show in Plaza Frontenac, TRA in Branson and VTR in Rockford..  In between times there will be plenty of opportunities to enjoy a pleasant drive to some destination or other.  This brings up the topic of impromptu drives.  One such drive happened in early May on a very pleasant evening some folks decide it was a good night to go to Ted Drews.  When isn't a good time to go to Ted Drews?  But this was a top down drive in perfect weather.  What?  You didn't hear about it?  Not surprising since we haven't yet implemented a phone tree for just such occasions.  So here's the deal we agreed upon at last month's meeting:

If you want to be notified of a last minute drive let John Lamberg know by calling him at (314) 434 4467, (314) 496 4278 or Emailing him at Cr8afix@aol.com .  He will maintain a data base.  This is an opt-in program.  If you don't want to be a part of it you don't have to do anything.  If you do want to be notified of impromptu drives let John know.  Some will be designated as first or second tier callers and will be given a short list of fellow participants who will call the next tier down.  This downloads the bulk of the work to many hands and many hands makes for light work.  (Just who this guy Many Hands is I don't know) (Matt Gossett will help too.  See Impromptu Rides below. Editor)

If you haven't paid you dues this may be your last newsletter.  Or maybe the last one was.  Pay today!

Dues Are Past Due

Anyone who did not renew by this month is no longer on the membership roster.  Since the roster is included in this newsletter, if you see someone who is not on the list who should be, contact Bonnie or Creig.  Bonnie David (636) 949-0825 or Creig Houghtaling oldtoys@brick.net

Roster

The new roster is being published for all current members.  For this one month everyone will receive a hard copy of the newsletter with the roster folded in.  Please e-mail all updates and corrections to Creig Houghtaling.

Impromptu Rides By Matt Gossett

It has come to the attention of the Chapter that a “short list” of names and telephone numbers would be more effective in garnering support and participation with the “impromptu rides” around town.  Clearly outside of the “planned rides” like the Polar Bear run, etc., “impromptu rides” typically revolve around such important aspects such as getting ice cream or perhaps having a drink with fellow Triumph enthusiasts.

In short, someone wishing for a quick jaunt around town may wish to call a few SLTOA members and create a small caravan of Triumphs.  It may sound silly but, how much fun could be added to a trip to Ted Drewes this way?  All I can say is, “Count me in!”

If you are interested in participating in various, spur-of-the-moment rides, “just for the Hell of it,” please contact either Matt Gossett at mgossett@clgenterprises.com or John Lamberg at cr8afix@aol.com to reserve your spot on the list.

I mean, who needs an excuse to drive a Triumph anyway?  Why not enjoy it with your compatriots?

TRA 2005 in Branson MO June 23rd-26th

I asked past SLTOA member Gary Fuqua (who lives in Branson) if he was involved in the planning for TRA this year and if there was any planned tours of his shop.  Gary has lots of Triumphs.  The following is his response:

Yes, I have been very involved.  While we don't have a specific activity involving the shop we are going to be doing several activities that are right next door so there will be opportunities to drop in and see it.  We will also probably go over and take a short tour of Mark Trimbles collection and perhaps Jim Cox's.  Should be loads of fun.  Hope to see you and some of the St. Louis Triumph Club members.  We have lots of great driveouts planned along with several other really neat things.  Cheers, Gary

I told him I would use his response in the letter and the following was second response:

OK, please feel free to.  We are going to have, what I think, will be a unique autocross for those that are into that.  I have a course laid out inside the industrial park!  Changing elevations, blind corners, etc.  We have the banquet set up at the Lodge of the Ozarks and it should be great.  We are also going to have several pairs of tickets to various shows that are being donated and can be used any time.  Lost in the Fifties has even invited those of us in town on Wednesday to come to an afternoon performance (discounted rate), park our cars in a special roped off area and then they are throwing a free Ice Cream social for us which will include visits from all the cast.  Pretty cool!!  Cheers, Gary

The following is one last invitation for TRA:

This is Your Last Chance for The 2005 TRA National Meet!

By Jim Wortsman, President  -  Texas Triumph Register

Uncle Sam (and the TRA) Wants You!

This coming weekend is not only Memorial Day, but it also marks your last chance for FREE raffle tickets for the great prizes, and the lower registration fee for the TRA National Meet in Branson, MO!  By getting your registration postmarked by May 31, you’ll  still get 7 FREE raffle tickets, the registration rate of $65 which includes the welcome dinner and festivities for you and a guest, TRA group seating for the Branson Belle riverboat cruise and show (if selected), and your choice of dinners at the Awards Banquet (if selected).

The prizes that have been donated thus far are some really nice prizes.  These are not small, inexpensive, throw away prizes.  In case you haven’t heard, some of the better ones include a car top of your choice from Robbins Auto Tops, a crystal desk ornament with a hand carved TRA logo from Branson Embroidery, a walnut steering wheel and horn assembly from Classic Sports Cars, and the grand prize is a pair of tickets on Continental Airlines to any destination in the continental U.S., Alaska, Canada, or the Caribbean!

As I’m sure you’ve heard, we have scheduled some terrific drives, a winery tour, a poker rallye, a fun-khana, an incredible autocross, and four nights of action packed events beginning on Wednesday night for the early attendees.  Plaques will be awarded for winners in the poker rallye, the fun-khana, and of course, the autocross.

I want to make one more plea to you folks “west of the Mississippi River”.  We haven’t received as many registrations as we had hoped to get from you.  As I have continued to say, this is the first TRA meet ever to be held west of the Mississippi, and it may never happen again!  So I urge you to take advantage while you can.  You won’t be sorry!

The schedule of events, registration form, contact information, and links to all Branson information can be found on our website at www.TexasTriumphRegister.org.  It’s also available on the TRA website at www.TriumphRegister.com, and on the VTR website at www.VTR.org.  Don’t wait for the prices to go up - get your registration in NOW!!!
