Presidential Babelation - March, 2002
J. H. Strowbridge
Hey, I made it! The elections are this month! We have some excellent candidates with three of the offices sporting “new blood”. I truly enjoyed the presidential gig this past year. I didn’t know if it would be a raging disaster that night last March when the elections took place. I figured I would give it a shot… What I discovered is that with the folks involved in this club and the organization between us “the place runs itself.”
Karl J. cookin’, Arlie and Joe settin’ up the picnic, Bonnie makin’ reservations, Dave and Linda doin’ the Scottish show, Brian gettin’ the shirts, Creig puttin’ out Exhaust Notes, Gary killin’ viruses, Charlie pickin’ up the radios, The Mann’s hostin’ an excellent day, Jack leadin’ the winery tour, Robin and Cheryl havin’ babies, YIKES! The Place Runs Itself!! The SLTOA is what they call in the corporate world, self-directed.
Benjamin Disraeli (a personal friend of mine) said, “The secret of success is consistency of purpose.” The people of The SLTOA love a.) their cars b.) a good time and c.) mixing the two together. I have been honored to serve as the president of this organization, and due to the above facts SLTOA success is intrinsic!
And don’t forget April 7th. Be there or be “less than round”.
Pray for good weather and see the website for details.
Discussions involved both past and future events. A big THANK YOU to Mel and Gail Parentin for hosting an excellent Polar Bear Run. The Missouri Endurance Rally is coming up in March and below is an article on it.
SLTOA may have several cars entered. The Second Annual April Stress Reduction Clinic is on for April 7th, it involves more challenging driving this year but with the same reward of fine food and cuisine. Past President Arlie King brought up the Route 66 Car Show in Eureka. This show features mostly U.S. classics but could use some fine British culture. The Route 66 Show is on the third weekend in April. The WeebMaster, Gary Allgood is organizing the Herman, MO Bed & Breakfast Tour this May 11th & 12th. Joe Miller and Arlie volunteered to help get together all that which needs getting together for our annual picnic meeting in June. Thanks guys. Nominations were discussed and the list is thus: Richard Etz, President…Jason Buchek, Vice President…Chris Allgood, Secretary…Bonnie David, Treasurer…Creig Hougtaling, Newsletter Editor. Seeing as the nominations produced roughly one candidate per office, the election should be a nail-biter. Popular opinion decided that the spirit of volunteerism within SLTOA rendered the office of Events Chairman obsolete. Also discussed post-meeting was the idea of the club purchasing an events “tent” which would serve as both a place to congregate and a way to publicize The SLTOA at car shows.

Well, it's just a few short weeks to the 7th Annual Missouri Endurance Rally. Saturday, March 23rd is just around the corner! Time to get all those last minute checks done, the oil changed, and some yummy road snacks made. Hopefully, the temperature will be a lot warmer this year than last year. Of course, I'd rather have it cold than the total downpours of two years ago. However, as a whole we've been lucky. The first four years the rally was ran the weather was always perfect during the day even if it did get fairly cold at night. As I write this, the sun is shinning and it is 58 degrees outside. I can only wish that the 23rd and 24th of March will be the same.
Inquiries about the rally have been fairly brisk. So far, the majority of the teams registered have been from out of town. We're trying to at least match last year's participation which was 15 teams. Our real goal is 20. I really believe we could reach that if we could get just a few more our of local club members to give it a try. I believe that once you do one, you'll want to do it again next year. This year the hours have been pared down to 20 as well as the mileage down to about 600. The driving will be mostly restricted to the Ozark region of the state so the roads should be great and the distance back to St Louis not too far. Everyone should be getting back to St Louis by 2 a.m. and we're going to have an awards continental breakfast around 9:30 a.m. on Sunday morning. Like last year, everyone who competes will get a framed certificate with a picture of themselves and their teammate. Also, besides 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place awards we will be giving an award to the team that endured the most miles! It should be a great time. Even if you can't compete, come on out and see the teams off. We need several volunteers to make this event move like clockwork. If you'd like to volunteer, either show up at the next meeting or leave a message on the club hotline at (314) 995-8664.
See the website for details on The Second Annual April Stress Reduction Clinic.
We will of course be celebrating the onset of Daylight Savings Time but we have
the added opportunity of celebrating my mother’s birthday. She will be traveling, along with my sister to the St. Louis area from Northern New Jersey and April 8th will be her XXth birthday. Chivalry prevents me from listing which birthday this will be, but trust me, it’s one of those “milestone” birthdays. Tune up your “pipes” for a rousing rendition of “Happy Birthday” at brunch, if you would please . . . it’s cool, my mother Jessie is of British decent.
Bizarre LBC trivia note: my car is named after Jess’s mother, Agnes.
We are planning an over night cruise to Hermann Missouri for the second weekend in May. We will be staying in a B&B in or near Hermann. Look over the links on our web site, and lets decide on where we would like to stay. We need to get this planned in advanced if there is any hope of getting us all in the same B&B or area of town.
